Beynac, clinging to its past as much as to its rock, is one of those magnificent small villages that must not be missed under any circumstances. Dominating the Dordogne, Beynac is an emblematic place in the region. Often used as one of the symbols of Périgord, you will wander through the cobbled streets climbing to the summit. Built in the Bronze Age on this ideally placed rock, the castle and village of Beynac were a stopping place for great names such as Richard the Lionheart and Simon de Montfort.
For centuries, river traffic in flat-bottomed boats on the Dordogne river stopped at the port of Beynac. Richard I, known as "Lionheart", seized the castle in 1197 and settled in the central keep. This castle and village are very lively and form a central trading hub in the region. In the photo above, we can glimpse the Beynac chapel, dating from the 12th century then restored, embellished and strengthened in the 18th, dedicated to Mary.
You must take its cobbled, steep streets, its stone steps worn by time to admire the clear view over the Dordogne river. Once at the top, the castle and its breathtaking view await you.
